Surgical Waiting List
To ensure equality and non-discrimination among patients in the provision of surgical procedures in the hospitals of the National Health System (E.S.Y.) and those under Legislative Decree 2592/1953 (A’ 254), as well as in University Hospitals and Departments, the Surgical Waiting List was established under Article 58 of Law 4368/2016.
The surgical waiting list is the registry that reflects the priority order of scheduled surgical procedures. Its preparation is based on medically documented evaluation of the severity of the condition and the allowable waiting time that remains safe for the patient’s health, conducted by specialist physicians of the Emergency Department (T.E.P.) and the Morning and Afternoon Outpatient Clinics.
The table below shows the categorisation of surgical procedures according to the assessment of case severity and the allowable waiting period:
|
CATEGORY |
CASE ASSESSMENT | Estimated waiting time until surgery |
| 1 | Cases with rapid progression where delay affects the outcome | Up to 2 weeks |
| 2 | Cases with potentially rapid progression where delay may affect the outcome | 3 – 6 weeks |
| 3 | Cases with severe symptoms or dysfunction, without rapid progression | 7 – 12 weeks |
| 4 | Cases with mild/moderate symptoms or dysfunction, without rapid progression | 12 – 24 weeks |
| 5 | Cases without symptoms or dysfunction, without rapid progression | 24 weeks and above |
The patient is promptly informed of the unique identification code assigned at the time of registration on the Surgical Waiting List, of any changes affecting their scheduled procedure, and likewise must notify the hospital in case of inability to attend.
