Histopathology Laboratory

The Histopathology Laboratory of Aigio General Hospital has been operating since 1989, and two positions for Consultant Histopathologists are foreseen for the department.

The paramedical staff consists of three laboratory technicians, and at present the Laboratory does not have a separate secretariat. The specimens processed by the Laboratory are directly linked to the surgical activity of the hospital’s clinical departments (General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, etc.). The Laboratory also receives specimens from external physicians in the wider region.

The primary role of the Histopathology Laboratory is the proper processing and macroscopic and microscopic examination of surgical specimens and biopsies, with the aim of providing accurate histopathological diagnosis to guide further patient management. A significant component of this process is the performance of special techniques (histochemistry, immunohistochemistry) for the detection of specific microorganisms (e.g., H. pylori), identification of primary tumour site, and assessment of prognostic and predictive markers, particularly for oncological cases.

With a focus on personalised medical care, the Laboratory also provides Histopathology Consultation Services, aimed at explaining specialised histopathological terminology included in diagnostic reports, as well as the relevance of predictive and prognostic biomarkers—offered individually to each patient in a dedicated session.
